Summer Sandlot Series

Starting this summer, KPLL will be hosting our inaugural Summer Sandlot Series where kids ages 6 to 12 are welcome to come down to Vets Park for informal pickup games in a semi-structured environment.  Families of players are also welcome to participate in non-baseball events such as movie nights.

Two divisions:
- A/AA Division - 6 to 8 year olds.  Coaches pitch
- AAA/Majors - 9 to 12 year olds.  Kids pitch

Coaches/Volunteers: At least 2 KPLL approved (background checked) volunteers present per division every game.  Volunteers role will be to ensure safety and monitor interactions. Volunteers will not set rules or “umpire” the game.

Mission:
- Have fun playing the game of baseball.
- Increase the love for and participation in baseball.
- Develop leadership skills amongst participants.
- Teach participants how to negotiate and make decisions.
- Increase independence and autonomy of participants.

Where: Games will be played potentially at Vets Park and the Town Common

When: Starting once the All Star season dies down (towards the end of July / early August) through the beginning of Fall Ball (early Sep at the latest)

We plan to open concessions and show baseball movies or a fun family atmosphere.

The plan is to play 1 weekday night (night to be decided based on field availability).  Play for 2 hours.

League Rules:
- At least six players per team.  Goal 10, no more than 12 per team
- Lob-pitching, so that strikeouts are minimized and balls in play are maximized.
- No walks.
- No catcher and thus no stealing.
- Two-step lead-offs maximum.
- Kids pick the captains, and the captains in turn pick the teams.
- Teams decide and negotiate positions on the field.
- Each squad picks a team name, but the team name can't be that of a MLB team or notable college squad (creativity is encouraged).
- Kids are responsible for keeping up with the score.
- Kids are responsible for making their own calls and enforcing the rules (even if their rules are not the correct ones).
